My friend left a gift for me and when I got home to open it I couldn't help my excitement (I love gifts). I saw the bag had my favorite coffee brand on it so I knew it had to be good. I picked it up and my arm almost fell off with how heavy it was. I wondered out loud what kind of coffee could be so heavy. I looked inside and saw what looked like a pink rock. I thought, "that's odd...is it...a rock?" Then I recalled a conversation we had earlier in the week about pink Himalayan salt and about how I should try it because I love salt. I touched my finger to the rock and tasted it...tastes like salt. I licked the entire rock...definitely salt. So I said to my husband, "oh! It's a pink Himalayan salt rock! How cool! How do I get it in my food? Do I grind it or something?" I started to pull the rock out and realize it has a...cord? Huh...strange. It's a salt light? I don't get it. My husband says, "aw I get it...salt and light. Very clever." I looked up the part of the Bible that talks about salt and light and found it in Matthew 5:13-16:
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.Salt adds flavor to a dish and makes everything taste better. The friend that gave me the salt rock said it eliminates mold and other bad stuff from the air - it purifies the air we breath and cuts down on respiratory problems. Just like the salt rock, we are here to eliminate the bad from our surroundings and bring joy to those around us. Our salt tastes like God's character and our "salt shakers" are only refilled by him. Light brightens the path for those in the dark to see; our light is powered by his love and is here to enlighten others to the goodness and love of God. We learn from the Holy Spirit within us and from those who go before us. What we learn pours out to those that come after us and multiplies exponentially.
At the end of Ephesians 6, Paul talks about passing on what we learn a little bit, saying:
21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing.22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.Paul received the family inheritance from Jesus and sent his inheritance to those whom learned under him. Tychicus was one of these messengers that received the inheritance to pass on to the Ephesians. Paul sent Tychicus with confidence, knowing he would carry on with the same Spirit that led him; he sent him knowing it would be like Paul doing it himself. In the same manner, we have received the family inheritance of God's character and knowledge of the Good News from the Holy Spirit teaching and guiding us and also from those we've followed. The inheritance is like an investment that matures and we leave it for those who follow in our footsteps of the family business. The investment might look different in the hands of our inheritors but we share the same heart, same mind and the same Spirit living within us. We share one goal: to shower God's love and spread the Good News to the world.
23 Peace to the brothers and sisters,[a] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
Grab hold of your teachers and preachers to learn everything you can about God and his family. Take what you learn and let it create life and light inside you to pour out on everyone around you. Pass on the wisdom and love to your inheritors; watch your investment grow and mature with joy and excitement because what you carry won't die with you, it will live on and grow exponentially.
