The Power of Positivity | Four Steps to Being a More Positive Person

Negativity is a nasty thing. It creeps in and takes over our thought processes to a point that can be paralyzing. Being negative becomes a habit that is so hard to break that we don't even want to try. It's a comfortable rut that we sit in and complain about. We spread negativity around like a stomach bug and think it's normal. So how do we get out? How can we dig ourselves out of the rut and change our bad habit of being negative? I know one way: through Jesus. Here are four easy steps to being a more positive person:

FIRST: You have to be alerted to your negative words and thoughts. Start each day asking Jesus to alert you when these thoughts develop and especially when those thoughts become words.

SECOND: Ask Jesus to reveal the source of these thoughts and squash it like a bug! Get rid of it! You don't want a lying source sitting around in your thoughts.

THIRD: Ask Jesus to be the source of your new thoughts: the truth that covers over the place where the lie was. Ask him to show you the positive in what seems like a negative situation. He'll show you his perspective about what's going on and you'll see things from his view. He has such a unique way of bringing light to a dark spot and showing us what we are clearly missing.

FOURTH: Voice the positive. Put words to the good things Jesus shows you. Create a new habit of bringing light to every conversation. Train your eye to see the positive in every situation.

I first started this process when I was 16. A friend and I were hanging out and I was explaining the facts of my horrible day and expressing how things could be better if people would just do things a different way. She said, "wow, Jess, you're really negative." I was shocked...I didn't know why she would even say this to me. All I was doing what stating facts about the injustices around me. It made me mad. I wasn't a negative person...was I?!? I asked Jesus to show me if I was negative and each day I became more and more aware of the ugly coming out of my mouth. I'm so thankful for a good friend that would point this out to me and for the process Jesus walked me through to start changing. It was almost like I could see my words on paper as they came out and I wasn't happy with them. I asked him where the thoughts came from and he showed me that they originated from anger that stemmed from the four-wheeler accident that turned my world upside down. He then showed me that the four-wheeler accident didn't turn my world upside down, but right side up! He showed me how fortunate I was to be alive and how happy I should be with the new life he created for me through the healing of my mind. He reminded me of what I had gained in the healing process and made me realize what I had lost didn't even matter. His perspective gave me a new outlook on life. I went from griping about EVERYTHING to being thankful for the blessings around me.
I'm so happy I got to celebrate
my nephew leaving for the
Air Force soon.

Every new day is a chance to be positive again. We get the privilege of choosing to be positive. Every day I ask Jesus to help me be positive and show light to people I see. Some days I don't do as well; some days the negative seeps in like a virus, but Jesus is faithful to show me and help me out of it. Life is so different with a positive outlook. If you struggle with negativity or even if you think you don't, take a few minutes and ask God to show you how you can improve your outlook. Ask Him to alert you to negative thoughts. If you don't see them, ask Him to alert you to how many positive thoughts you have in a day. Make it a game! Count the positive thoughts and at the end of the week, see what your average is. Each week, ask God to help you get better. Watch your habits change and outlook brighten. Try it, I think it will be fun!

Reforming Undesirable Behavior

You know that thing you do that you don't wanna do but you keep doing it because you can't stop doing it? These behaviors might include: lying, cheating, raging, gossiping, pornography, drinking, drugs, eating, throwing up, etc. Reforming these behaviors on your own can prove to be a little tricky. I'd say reforming undesirable behavior might even be impossible on your own. But there is still hope for us. With the love of God, the power of the Holy Spirit and a renewed mind, you can reform your behavior. Youth conference with lots of God encounters! An encounter with God is the easiest way to reform undesirable behavior because the encounter will fill you with the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord renews our minds in a way that informs our bodies of what's beneficial to our spiritual health in the eyes of God. So, your mouth doesn't want to lie anymore; your tongue won't allow you to eat certain things; your eyes will be opened to the evil of pornogra...

Don't Pick Up Hitch Hikers...

My husband's passion for hearing God and sharing his words is inspiring. The knowledge God gives him to articulate to his people is astounding. It amazes me that my husband holds these spiritual words within him and nearly bursts with excitement on Sunday trying to get it all out to a physical world. Which brings up Joshua 23. This chapter is Joshua's final charge to the leaders and future generations. What is a charge? It's kind of like issuing a challenge and a warning all at the same time. At weddings, the minister charges the couple with the responsibility associated with marriage...in Joshua, he is charging the leaders to beware of the physical world around them. They've driven out the big tribes from the Promised Land but a few stragglers still remain and Joshua warns the leaders to avoid any entanglements with them. Temptation is sure to be present among these stragglers and they would be wise to remember all God has done for them. He said: 6 “Be very strong;...

Tips for Teachers for a Better Work Environment

Sun kissed and fully rested, teachers walk into the school building for in-service and the start of school full of zen and good vibes. Now let me ask how long you think all those good vibes are going to last? Come on...we all know that teachers are notorious for drama. gossip and COMPLAINING. BUT with Jesus fresh on the mind, you can steer clear of that this year. This year, let’s approach each situation with prayer first and action later. Here are my tips for a more pleasant work environment... Avoid Drama: STEP AWAY from the he said, she said game and mind your own business. If someone wants to talk to you about an offense towards someone else or takes competitiveness a little too far, emotionally back away. Change the subject or even say, “I’d rather not talk about that.” Old habits die hard so when you’re alerted to drama ask God to help you back away.  Proverbs 21:23 “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.” Stop Gossiping: ...
