Kick Temptation in the Face

Temptation is inevitable; it is a fact of life that we face every day. We are constantly tempted by food, drink, self promotion, pride, addictions, pretty things and much more. You know by now that when faced with temptation, giving in is too easy. Practicing self control and using reason allude you for a moment, making resistance nearly impossible. We've all been tempted by something; even Jesus was tempted. In Luke 4:1-13, we learn that Jesus went into the wilderness full of the Holy Spirit and was tempted for 40 days. HOLD UP...He was full of the Holy Spirit and was tempted for 40 DAYS . During his 40 days in the wilderness, he was tempted by lust of the flesh (he was human, too), lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; he punched every form of temptation right in the face. He totally nailed it, and why wouldn't he??? He's the perfect mix of God and man, and he totally rocked his time on Earth. Lust of the Flesh First, his flesh was tempted. The devil says, ...

How to Live a Spiritual Life in a Physical World

In one of my earlier posts this week , I talked about living a spiritual life as opposed to being caught up in a physical world. When you get down to it, you might be left scratching your head, wondering what that actually means. While I'm young and still learning, let me offer you some tips: 1) Fall in love with God and...everyone! Read how in my previous post . 2) Have an interactive relationship with God. Make praying throughout your day a priority and don't always do all the talking. Listen a little bit and watch God reveal new and exciting things to you. Find new ways to pray and include it in your daily routine. 3) Say "no" to bad things around you. We are all tempted everyday by anger, greed, lust, and other temptations. Don't be weak! Say "no" and live the good life. If you fall into something before you even realized you said "yes", get out! Pray, repent, and ask Jesus to bring you back on track. 4) Do what God tells you to ...

Don't Pick Up Hitch Hikers...

My husband's passion for hearing God and sharing his words is inspiring. The knowledge God gives him to articulate to his people is astounding. It amazes me that my husband holds these spiritual words within him and nearly bursts with excitement on Sunday trying to get it all out to a physical world. Which brings up Joshua 23. This chapter is Joshua's final charge to the leaders and future generations. What is a charge? It's kind of like issuing a challenge and a warning all at the same time. At weddings, the minister charges the couple with the responsibility associated with marriage...in Joshua, he is charging the leaders to beware of the physical world around them. They've driven out the big tribes from the Promised Land but a few stragglers still remain and Joshua warns the leaders to avoid any entanglements with them. Temptation is sure to be present among these stragglers and they would be wise to remember all God has done for them. He said: 6 “Be very strong;...

Angry Much?

I went into my first year of teaching high school math totally green, inexperienced, and super stoked about my new adventure as an adult at the ripe age of freshly 22. I had a couple classes of 9th grade Algebra students who are still very dear to my heart. On one of their first tests, I did everything I thought I could to prepare them, which included giving them a different version of the actual test for their review. They did the review in class and I helped them with it and I was confident I had prepared them properly for the test. I gave out the test the next day, graded it, and was SHOCKED that 90% of my students failed. I was livid! I was so mad that they hadn't taken advantage of the help I'd given them - the leg up on being totally prepared for this test and I took it out on them. I yelled at them and told them how disappointed I was. I exclaimed how LUCKY they were to be given the test ahead of time and how silly it was of them to not appreciate it. My outburst was met...

Read Before Signing

Man this week was hard to get what I needed for this post. School is ramping back up (as you can tell from my last post ) so all the meetings and planning conflicted with our Bible studies. I missed a lot this week, it feels like, so all I have for you in Sunday's musings. In Joshua 9 , the Gibeonites trick Israel into giving them a place in their group. The Gibeonites heard of God's power through Israel and decided they wanted to join the team instead of fight the team. Unfortunately, Joshua did not consult with the Lord and made a covenant to help support the Gibeonites by allowing them a small part in their daily duties. ( Joshua 9:14 ) Israel made this treaty out of deception and it affected them for generations. All the way into 2 Samuel 21:1 , Saul wants to wipe them out for their deception and his desire to do this brought famine on the land. God took Israel's treaty with the Gibeonites seriously and honored it for a very long time until his people came to him an...

Shiny Objects - Joshua 7

For Joshua 7, we had our youth group leader, Jason, preach and I think it is safe to say that everyone enjoyed it. He did such a good job of laying out the material in a clear way and pulling in his personal journey to make the passage more relatable. It helped this week, for me at least, that Joshua 7 was a little more fun to dissect than Joshua 6. Chapter 6 had some weighty material but was pretty cut and dry as far as the storyline went. In Chapter 7, Joshua and the army were planning on going further into the Promised Land to claim, Ai. Ai was a small community so Joshua sent a small portion of the army (about 3000 people) to take the land. They went with the confidence from their former victory in Jericho and the knowledge that their army was bigger than Ai's. Bolstered with confidence and knowledge, they marched into Ai, fought with all they had, and ran out screaming like little children over their fear and defeat. 36 men died and the takeover was unsuccessful. When Jos...

Believing the Lie

If you were at church a couple Sundays ago, this story about an anonymous person might sound a little familiar...but I'm going to tell it from my perspective...because it happened to me. I always go outside and pet the kittens. We have 6 baby kittens and 1 older kitten. I was sitting on the porch doing my usual thing, just thinking about life and enjoying God's creations and I started to see flashing lights. I thought, oh no! I hope I'm not getting a migraine! (I used to get migraines in junior high and that's how they started). I blinked and blinked and took deep breaths but it didn't stop so I went inside. I went to the restroom and prayed against the migraine and for healing over my body and head. It got worse. I then went to the medicine cabinet and started to look for anything for headaches. When I grabbed the bottle and tried to read it, I couldn't see anything. It was like I was going blind (or at least, what I think going blind would be like). Along ...
